The Hornets have been looking to get rid of Lance Stephenson since shortly after they signed him. He hasn’t fit well on their team but as recently as last year he showed he could be an important part of a good team. He would slip right into the Cavs starting shooting guard spot and provide defense and athleticism. His shooting could return after a change in environment. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist would provide great defense and open court offense off the bench. He would fit together well with J.R. Smith and even Iman Shumpert off the bench. Noah Vonleh is a rookie with a ton of upside, including a developing outside shot. He would give the Cavs a young big that they can develop.

Stephenson struggled with Kemba Walker and could struggle with Kyrie Irving, Kidd-Gilchrist has struggled mightily with his shot and Vonleh is a project even though he was a high draft pick. While the three of them have a ton of talent none of them surely make the Cavs better without Love. They increase depth and increase defense and athleticism.

The Hornets may be willing to make this trade as their current make-up leaves something to be desired. With Love they can build around Kemba Walker, a dynamic point guard, Al Jefferson, a strong, large big and Love’s scoring prowess. Giving up two recent starters and a Top 10 pick is a big price to pay but Love has proven to be worth it in years past.

Thoughts: A good quantity for quality kind of trade for the Cavs. They answer a few of the issues that the team has and could help build a solid squad. Much like the Suns trade, the Cavs would have to get creative in finding shooting. Vonleh could create an exciting long term prospect.
