#3. Monta Ellis, Dallas Mavericks
3 years/$30M (2012-2013: $11M)
Age: 27 (2016-2017: 30)
Peers: Demar DeRozan, Gerald Wallace, Danilo Gallinari
Role: Starting Shooting Guard
2012-2013 Statistics: 82 games, 37.5 mpg, 19.2 ppg (41.6%/28.7%/77.3%), 3.9 rpg, 6.0 apg, 2.1 spg, 0.4 bpg
Rationale: If Mark Cuban’s goal was to assemble the worst defensive backcourt in the league, he succeeded. Ellis is a volume scorer who can’t shoot or guard anyone who can. The signing reeks of desperation after the Maverick’s struck out for the third straight year in free agency. In 2011, Dallas tailored its roster to Dirk Nowitzki. With Nowitzki no longer capable of carrying an offense by himself, seeking another star is understandable. At this point, however, Ellis is no star. Somebody has to shoot next year, but the Mavericks could have found a better bargain than the $7,660 per field goal attempt the Bucks paid Ellis last year.
