KJG's 2009 NBA Free Agent Preview: Forwards
By Staff
KJG has already shown you the guards we think could possibly call Cleveland home for the 2009-2010. Now it’s time to take a look at possible free agent signings at the forward positions.
This is a big position to fill for the Cavaliers. With the possibility that Anderson Varejao could opt out of his contract and the contract of Joe Smith expiring, power forward could be the teams biggest need. So here’s a run down on the top free agents at Power Forward.
Brandon Bass, Power Forward.
What I like: At 6’8 Brandon Bass has a strong, bulky build that goes along with his brute strength. Bass has a decent mid range jumper for a post and he loves to take bigger forwards off the dribble. I love Bass’ ability to work in the post or take a turnaround jumper.
What I dislike: When it comes to defense Bass’ biggest assest is his strength. At 6’8 he lacks the ideal size for a post player. Taller shooting PF’s could easily take advantage of his lack of size.
What I like: There are two things that CV does well…score and rebound. He’s a big post that can stroke it from midrange or throw it down with either hand. He has great ball handling skills for a big man and loves to drive to the basket. Due to his large frame and good strength CV can finish in traffic and occassionally draw the and one.
What I don’t like: When it comes to defense Villanueva is…lazy. He’s a soft defender who’s effort is close to nonexistant. He plays too close when playing on ball defense and tends to get burned quite easily. Villanueva lacks defense, period. No help defense, post defense, or man to man. BUT, with the proper coaching and being surrounded by a better defensive team Villanueva’s defense can only improve.
What I like: The former 2nd round pick of the Cavs has come a long way since his 2002 rookie campaign. Matt Barnes can straight up hit the 3 ball. Barnes is bested used off the bench to re-energize his team. Barnes can play either forward position but is most effective at the Small Forward position. Even though Barnes is only 6’7 he still manages to hold his on the boards, fighting for every loose ball.
What I don’t like: Barnes tends to lose control when he’s driving to the basket and he lacks the strength and size to post up a defender. Even though Barnes is a decent ball handler he still struggles to create opportunities off the dribble and tends to settle for spot up jumpers.
Ime Udoka, Small Forward.
What I like: Defense is Udoka’s true calling. He’s a great perimeter defender with decent quickness and size. Udoka is very strong for his size and has a strong defensive mentality. Udoka’s offensive game is much more limited than his defense. He loves to spot up a three from the corner or pop up a jumper.
What I don’t like: Although Udoka is a great all around defender his offense needs work. He lacks the ability and ball handling to drive to the hole and finish at the rim. He’s a bit small for the Small Forward position and might fit better as a two guard. Though he has good strength Udoka rarely backs down smaller defenders.
