Do the Cleveland Cavaliers have any players that could break out this upcoming season?

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in a rough spot. Of the 21 players that were on the team’s roster at some point last season, only three of them were under 25 years old– Kyrie Irving, Kay Felder, and Edy Tavares.

Felder, who is an undersized guard, and Tavares, who is a goliath center, are both lacking stardom. While Irving is one of the most notable, young players in the league, his superstardom has already set in. To answer the question first question, no, the Cleveland Cavaliers do not have a player that will break out this season. And, that should concern them.

They are returning most of their same team from last season. Players like Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith, Tristan Thompson are all solid players, but they will not have a breakout season. Honestly, the closest thing the Cavaliers could have to a break out is if Kevin Love somehow found his Minnesota-form again, where he averaged 26 points per game and 11 rebounds per game for two of his six seasons.

Their offseason additions did not brighten their future either. Jose Calderon, who played a total of 41 games last season, is 35-years-old. Their second signing of the offseason was Jeff Green. Green, while still having some capable years left, is half a decade younger than Calderon. While both are aging veterans, they do fill in where the Cavaliers had obvious holes.

The point is not that the Cavaliers should go and blow their team up and let Golden State win the next three championships, but that they need to start preparing for the future. In three years, when LeBron James in 35, there won’t be much hope in the Land. With James being able to be a free agent after this upcoming season, the Cavaliers lackluster offseason moves coupled with a not-so-bright future might force James to leave. Without even having a GM, it seems unlikely for Cleveland to land Melo too at this point.

While that is a completely different topic, the Cleveland Cavaliers need to be focused on the future from here on out. With James on their team, they have the pull of a social idol, and their focuses should be set on keeping him happy and bringing in the next generation of Cleveland basketball.
