According to a report, Cleveland Cavaliers players would welcome Markieff Morris into the fold.

With his unique talent, contract and situation, Morris has seemed like a possible trade target for the Cavs. He seems like the most talented player the Cavs could acquire with their limited assets. He is also on a long-term deal which is a big bonus for a Cavs team that doesn’t have the ability to acquire talent in other ways down the road.

A new report is out today, after the Cavs lost to the San Antonio Spurs last night, that key members of the team would welcome Morris in and believe it could be a good fit:

"Influential figures within the Cavaliers’ locker room are open to the notion of trading for disgruntled Phoenix Suns power forward Markieff Morris, cleveland.com has learned. They believe the Cavs can get the most potential out of him in the role he’d be assigned. They’re intrigued with the possibility of adding another stretch-four to back up Kevin Love. Also, Morris would serve as an insurance policy for an injury."

We have talked about Morris a ton in the past but now players seem to be as well. We have noted the Cavs do not have a backup power forward behind Love, injury concerns and limited play of other big men and how limited their assets are.

While the Cavs players seem to believe Morris could be a good fit and they can control him, the report says the team’s management does not:

"However, league sources with knowledge of the Cavaliers’ thinking insist there’s no connection right now between Morris and the defending Eastern Conference champions. I’m told the organization isn’t too keen with the idea, fearing the team chemistry would be ruined."

The reasoning is solid: Chemistry is important and Morris may not be happy with the limited role he would have on the team anyways.

That doesn’t mean the Cavs management isn’t interested in acquiring talent, they just have another idea in mind:

"Instead, the Cavs on the lookout for another defensive-minded wing with a long distance spot-up stroke, cleveland.com was informed — someone who can back up Shumpert, whose frantic style of play tends to lead to injuries. For the time being, that’s the position the Cavaliers would prefer to address."

The good, and maybe suprising, news there is that the Cavs are looking to add salary. Trading away Joe Harris not only helped save them money but also opened a roster spot. Adding Morris’ salary, via the Traded Player Exception, would add what has been estimated to be over $30 million to what Dan Gilbert pays out this year.

Markieff Morris could be traded and could be traded to the Cavaliers. At least it sounds like the Cavs players will like that move but his off the court issues, attitude and positional fit could keep the front office from pulling the trigger.

Are you surprised that Cavs vets would be okay with Markieff Morris coming in?
