Hawks insisting they will trade Josh Smith

Josh Smith will definitely be the hottest name on everyone’s lips in the next three days. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Atlanta Hawks are determined to ship Smith out of town before the deadline:

"The Atlanta Hawks have convinced numerous teams that they’re definitely trading Josh Smith this week, largely because they see the unpredictable lefty as a virtual lock to leave them in free agency this summer."

The Brooklyn Nets have been reported to be interested in Smith, but according to Stein there are several other teams that are willing to join the race.

Chris Broussard of ESPN has also said that the Washington Wizards are willing to trade anyone except for John Wall, Bradley Beal and Nene. However, other than the three mentioned players and perhaps Jordan Crawford, the Wizards don’t really have that many desirable pieces.

Two other teams that could be contenders to land Smith are Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns. The Suns have some nice movable pieces in Jared Dudley and Marcin Gortat, but it would be a risky move, especially not knowing whether Smith would resign with the team after the season. The same applies to Milwaukee Bucks, who could entice the Hawks with Brandon Jennings and other young players.

Stein also states that league sources have indicated that the Boston Celtics are also interested in Smith, but it would be hard for the two teams to do business. Kevin Garnett would not waive his no-trade clause unless it was a trade to the Los Angeles Clippers, so a potential trade would have to include Paul Pierce.

Not only would it be hard for the Celtics to say goodbye to the loyal Pierce, but selling the $15M+ that The Truth is owed next year to the Hawks would not be the easiest task. However, Pierce has a $5M buyout clause for next season, so the Hawks could theoretically land Pierce and buy him out, without jeopardizing the team’s flexibility in the free agent market this summer.

Knicks interested in J.J. Redick?

According to Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld, the New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic have been discussing an Iman Shumpert for J.J. Redick trade.

Lately Iman Shumpert’s name has popped up in several trade rumors, but the Knicks don’t seem that keen on letting Shumpert go. Still, the trade would make a sense. While Shumpert is a great young talent and defender, Redick would give the Knicks a huge boost in the team’s pursuit of a champinship this season.

J.J. Hickson could be moved

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo, the Portland Trail Blazers are still looking for ways to ship J.J. Hickson out of town:

Hickson has been great this season, averaging a double-double for the Blazers. While there are definitely teams around the league that would like to land Hickson, it is hard to see Portland getting something valuable in return, as Hickson is approaching the end of quite a modest contract.
