Consensus 2022 Mock Draft: Who could Cavs get at 56?

1. Keon Ellis, Wing, Alabama – 3 (SI, No Ceilings, Tankathon)

In a rare moment of consensus, three of the five mock drafts we consulted on potential second-round picks tabbed Alabama’s Keon Ellis for the Cavs at pick No. 56. That could be a coincidence, but it could also indicate that the Cavs have been doing their due diligence and looking closely at a player who has fallen down draft boards for some puzzling reason. Ellis is not going to become a star at the next level and he really struggled at Alabama this year in a larger role to create offense, but on a team with other on-ball players, he can be an awesome bench wing to come in and play hard defense and knock down perimeter shots.

T2. Trevion Williams, Big, Purdue – 1 (ESPN)

Two of Purdue’s three best players last season were both bigs, and head coach Matt Painter decided to rarely play the two together. As such Williams came off the bench despite being one of the most productive per-minute players in the country, an absolute masher in the post at 6’10” and 255 pounds. He is a really good passer and rebounder, but concerns about his defense and floor-spacing have locked him into that “traditional big” mold that tends to plummet on draft night. On the Cavs he could be an excellent fit as a change-of-pace big behind Jarrett Allen and Kevin Love.

T2. Hugo Besson, Guard, New Zealand Breakers – 1 (The Athletic)

Back to New Zealand for Dieng’s teammate, Huge Besson, who grew up in France before he played in the NBL. Besson is a score-first guard, with a smooth jumper and a lot of speed. He needs to develop as a passer because he is probably just a backup point guard, but he can be the kind of instant-offense guy a team has in its arsenal to unleash in the right settings.

Who will the Cavs draft in next week’s draft? Obviously, it’s a mystery, especially since they could still trade up, down or out of the draft. If they stay put, these players are those who could be chosen with each of their three picks.
