3 NBA Draft prospects for Cavs to target: Dalen Terry, Wing, Arizona

The Cavs have two positional needs heading into the 2022 offseason. They need to figure out their backup point guard position, with Ricky Rubio rehabbing a torn ACL (and, you know, on the Indiana Pacers until free agency begins) and Rajon Rondo aging and in some amount of trouble. They also need size on the wing that can play defense.

Dalen Terry checks both of these boxes. He is 6’6″ with a large wingspan and an endless motor, and he made a Pac-12 All-Defensive player last season. He also is an excellent passer and served as the backup point guard when Arizona needed him to be.

Terry is an absolute terror on defense, with active hands to generate steals and fast weakside rim protection. He averaged 1.2 steals per game despite limited minutes. The red flags for Terry come from his shaky shooting (35 percent for his career, 68 percent free-throw shooter) and lack of on-ball shot creation.

Those red flags are likely to push him down draft boards, making him potentially available at pick No. 39, but they are more developmental steps more than long-term weaknesses. He improved as a shooter from his freshman to sophomore seasons, and in the right role, he can thrive without scoring 20 or even 15 points per game. He would be a steal at 39 and a great piece to add to the roster.
