Several NBA teams have closed their doors when talking about trading some of the league’s brightest young talent for Kyrie Irving.

Kyrie Irving, who had his best year as a pro last season, had it leaked that he requested a trade. The rumor is that Kyrie was tired of being robin; he was tired of the Cavaliers catering to LeBron’s every will and not considering him.

When Irving hit the market, teams everywhere looked down their roster list and thought about how to get him. Irving, who does not have a no-trade clause, will go to whatever team offers Cleveland the best package. If Cleveland believes that they will get a top prospect, they can forget it.

The Phoenix Suns, who seem like one of the most talked about targets to land Irving, have already ruled out Josh Jackson in trade talks. De’Aaron Fox seems to be off the board, and it seems unlikely that the Cavaliers and Nuggets could agree on a package for Jamal Murray. New York doesn’t seem to want to cave on Porzingis. The young stardom is staying put, or so it seems.

Irving, a 25-year-old who played his collegiate ball at Duke, averaged 25.2 points per game last season. While his playmaking did improve, Irving might regress to a one-dimensional player if he isn’t with LeBron James, the Cavaliers renown leader for the past three seasons. Irving did put up 19.7 shots per game last season, so it seems like just pride that is the problem, not usage. Only with King James on his team has Kyrie shot over 40% from three.

The talent around the league is at an all-time high. Every team is in their own place in the rebuild. Kyrie Irving wants to go to a team where he will be the man, and there aren’t too many teams willing to give up what it takes. When he did captain his own team, Irving was just 78 games in three seasons. The Cavaliers last three seasons with the two superstars, they have won 161. Irving is best of a super role player and late-game threat, not a team’s main star.

Knowing that puts the Cavaliers in a tricky position. Do they let Kyrie play out his contract and see how the situation with LeBron plays out since he is a free agent after this season? Or, do they trade Kyrie for assets to help LeBron make another Finals run?
