Andrew White III, a three-and-D draft prospect, could shine for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the Summer League circuit.

For 60 young men, the night of the NBA draft is a coronation. They become the newest members of professional basketball teams, and begin the next step in their basketball journey. However, some players in need of a bit more polish take another path to the league.

Players who declare for the draft and are not selected are allowed to sign with any of the 30 NBA teams. These players sign non-guaranteed contracts and fight for a spot on the roster in the Summer League. Teams then make the decision whether or not to invite players to training camp.

Those fortunate enough will be given a spot on either the NBA team or its G-League affiliate.

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t make any selections in Thursday night’s draft, but they now move into the next part of the team building process: free agency. The team doesn’t have the cap space to make a big splash in free agency but signing a few undrafted rookies could help if they find a diamond in the rough.

With Richard Jefferson and J.R. Smith both on the wrong side of 30, the Cavaliers could use a young and capable wing.

Andrew White III, a shooting guard from Syracuse University, could fill that void if the Cavs decide to sign him to a spot on the actual roster. Last season, White scored 18.5 points per game for the Orange and shot 40.0 percent from three-point range. The senior stands at 6-7 and weighs 220 pounds, making him the ideal height for a modern-day three-and-D player.

White reportedly agreed to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Summer League team for a spot on their Summer League roster, according to Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon.

Last season, White exploded for a 40-point performance against Georgia Tech in which he shot 8 of 9 from beyond the arc.
