Could the Cleveland Cavaliers sign Kevin Garnett next season?

In an interview with ESPN’s David McMenamin, Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue told ESPN that he reached out to Kevin Garnett after Andrew Bogut suffered a season ending knee injury earlier this season.

Lue told ESPN:

"“I was like, ‘Man, you [Kevin Garnett] should come back and play for me.’ He [Garnett] was like, ‘Man, you all have a lot going on over there.’ That was before we hit our stride like we’re playing well now. He was like, ‘If you and [James] Posey were still playing, I would come.’ But he said, ‘But y’all are coaching and y’all are going through what you’re going through.’ He said, ‘Ah, I’m going to sit this one out.’ I said, ‘OK. We’ll call you next year.'”"

I would encourage you to read the full article here. McMenamin wrote an excellent piece about the pressure that comes with coaching the Cavs and the best player on the planet.

It would have been interesting seeing Garnett and LeBron James on the same team. James has gone out of his way to praise his former nemesis when Garnett announced his retirement just before the start of the season.

Right after his retirement, there were reports that Lue offered Garnett a job as an assistant coach.

Lue also left the door open for Garnett to return to the court next season.

The Cavs have shown that they like to have a veteran presence that bring toughness and hard work ethic. Just look at James Jones, Dahntay Jones, and Kendrick Perkins from 2015. Garnett would certainly bring that.

Garnett will be 41 by the start of next season. He is well past his prime and might be better off joining Allen Iverson and former Cav Larry Hughes in the BIG3.

However, he would be perfect for the Dahntay Jones role. Coming off the bench and delivering a “statement” is something that Garnett could certainly do well.

Lue and James love the toughness and competitiveness that Garnett brings to the court. Don’t be surprised if the Cavs continue to try and lure KG out of retirement to either play or coach.

That being said, he is doing pretty well for himself over at TNT. I would be surprised if Garnett goes back to the NBA as a coach or player anytime soon.
