NBA Draft: Cavs Workout Three Prospects Reportedly

While the Cleveland Cavaliers fight for their 1st NBA Title, the team also is focused on the NBA Draft. For the first time in some years, the NBA Draft is not where the team or the fans are looking for hope. Instead that hope is currently on the floor or on the Injured Reserve.

With LeBron James leading a group of solid, gritty role players the Cavs are tied 1-1 in the NBA Finals. Next year the Cavs will add to that team Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love (he hasn’t changed his story since arriving about being here next year) and Anderson Varejao. That is a lot of talent to join what could be the NBA Champs.

The Cavs also have a 1st and 2nd Round pick that they could use to add talent in the NBA Draft or trade to improve their team. Many think the picks could be used along with Brendan Haywood‘s non-guaranteed deal to bring even more talent to the roster. Haywood’s deal could bring back around $10 million in contracts, helping the other team clear cap space.

The Cavs are unlikely to bring back that much salary but could combine Haywood and either/both of their draft picks.

If the Cavs use the picks there seems to be quite a few directions they could go. A backup Stretch 4 to complete the big man rotation with Love, Varejao, Tristan Thompson and Timofey Mozgov would be good. An offensive minded backup point guard to compliment Matthew Dellavedova could help. A wing player to give LeBron James a bit of a break, something Shawn Marion failed to do, could be high on their list.

A report today is the Cavs had 3 players in for workouts:

Lets take a quick look at the 3 players.

Anthony Brown is a 6-7 Senior. He averaged almost 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game last year. A bit of an all around game, Brown likely won’t star in the NBA but could be a solid role player. Brown could develop as LeBron’s backup, with his experience helping him play sooner rather than later.

Brandon Ashley is a 6-9 Junior. He averaged 12 points and 5 boards a game for the Wildcats last year. Ashley was highly recruited but never really put it together in college. Ashley would fit in as a developmental Stretch 4 type for the Cavs as he has developed his shot in college and shows an ability to hit it.

Wayne Blackshear is out of Louisville and is a 6’5″ Senior shooting guard primarily. Blackshear is a good spot up shooter, hitting on 40% of his threes in college. For the Cavs, Blackshear would be an option as they prepare for J.R. Smith to possibly opt out and have to deal with Iman Shumpert‘s restricted free agency. With Joe Harris in his rookie year, Blackshear may not have space on the roster.

Any of these 3 NBA Draft prospects, who Haynes thinks are second rounders, excite you?
