The Cleveland Cavaliers and their fans still seem to think they’re dreaming — and rightfully so — as LeBron James is back and things all of a sudden feel really okay for once. But the details of LeBron’s new contract are being released and it’s not quite the deal we thought it would be.
Per Brian Windhorst, as part of the deal LeBron James is signing with the Cavaliers he can become a free agent once again next season and go through this whole charade once again. But as LeBron has pointed out, that’s not something he plans on doing to Cavs fans for a second time.
As part of the deal, James will have an option to become a free agent next summer but is fully committed to the Cavs long term, sources said.
“I always believed that I’d return to Cleveland and finish my career there,” James wrote in his essay in Sports Illustrated announcing his decision on Friday.
Now, before Cavs fans run to the nearest ledge, the deal isn’t as sinister as it may sound as the Cavaliers are being protected by LeBron from tying up too much money in him now which would prevent future free agents to be signed. It’s seems like a risky move, but there’s no way LeBron will leave again and his two-year deal is him begging fans to trust him again.
