If you didn’t already know, LeBron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, here comes the reactions. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert — the man who infamously penned a letter to LeBron following his departure from the team after seven seasons without a championship — has spoken about the recent news regarding James’ return to Cleveland. Gilbert spoke with Adrian Wojnarowksi of Yahoo Sports following the noon decision that LeBron would be leaving the Heat and coming back to Cleveland after a long and pain-staking process. Here is what Gilbert had to say:
Just happy for the people of Cleveland. We are driven at core by one thing: Delivering the city a championship.
It was reported earlier in the day that Gilbert’s letter to Cleveland was still an issue for LeBron in deciding to return to the Heat or wear a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform once again, but those reports were obviously just speculation. Gilbert did react rather swiftly — and harshly for that matter — to LeBron’s ESPN “Decision,” which received a lot of backlash from all angles.
Gilbert didn’t specifically mention anything about LeBron in his comment, but he’s absolutely right: this is about bringing a championship to Cleveland and nothing else. The two are said to have mended their shaky past already, so it was never a matter of Gilbert keeping LeBron from returning to the Cavs.
