Joel Embiid, potential No. 1 pick, suffers right foot injury

Lately it has seemed that Kansas center Joel Embiid is the favorite to be selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. But all that could change now with news coming out that Embiid suffered a right foot injury “sometime over the last few days.” According to ESPN’s Chad Ford and Jeff Goodman, it was confirmed to the network by Embiid’s agent, Arn Tellem, that Embiid will be getting various opinions from doctor’s because of the injury.

Chad Ford had this to say about Embiid’s injury via Twitter:

Although Tellem wouldn’t discuss the extent of Embiid’s injury, the early buzz around the news is that Embiid may have broken his right foot. The center was slotted to workout for a second team, the Milwaukee Bucks, later this week. Upon the Cavaliers working out Embiid, the results were positive and no major medical red cards were raised.

According to Tellem, more will be revealed about the injury on Friday.

UPDATE As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Embiid has indeed suffered a stress fracture in his right foot:

According to the report, Embiid has fractured the navicular bone in his foot, discovered in the physical Embiid received as part of his visit with the team last week. It is not believed that the injury was suffered during the workout with the Cavs, but regardless, Embiid will not be participating in any more workouts with teams before the draft, and will not be in attendance on draft night.

This obviously delivers a huge blow to Embiid’s draft stock. Stress fractures are a huge problem for centers, especially in the foot. The Cavs could still roll the dice on him, but it is unlikely that they will given this news. Embiid has now dropped to the fourth pick in the latest Draft Express mock,  released this afternoon.
