Over the weekend, video of Kansas center Joel Embiid’s workout surfaced and it was eye-popping. Embiid, who did not work out at the NBA combine and is viewed by some teams as risk due to his back injury, looked healthy and explosive in the video. Granted, it wasn’t live, full-go, 5 vs. 5 basketball, but Embiid looked good even hitting the occasional hook and dunking the ball with ferocity.
Now we have video of Duke freshman Jabari Parker’s workout at the same location and, while it’s not as impressive as Embiid’s, it highlights what’s to like about Parker. He’s a refined offensive talent who can score in a variety of ways. He also showed off some athleticism, dunking the ball. The lack of elite athleticism one of the knocks on Parker, but while he doesn’t have the massive upside that Embiid or Andrew Wiggins do, Parker is a fairly explosive player. The Carmelo Anthony comparison for Parker isn’t perfect, but they are similar in the same way that they are very good basketball players without relying on athleticism.
