Provided Anderson Varejao is still a Cleveland Cavalier next season, he will return home.
The NBA announced today that five NBA teams will be playing preseason games outside of America next October. The Cavaliers are one of the five teams and they will be playing the Miami Heat in Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 11 as part of NBA Global Game 2014. Rio is the second largest city in Brazil.
The game will take place at the HSBC Arena, which was were the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards played in 2013. It will be the second NBA game ever held in South America.
“We’re looking forward to the game in front of the great Brazilian fans,” Mike Brown said. “The trip also provides a great opportunity for our team to experience something special together as a group … We’re very proud to represent Cleveland on an international stage like this and it’s rewarding to be part of the NBA’s global reach and excitement.”
The arena will also host the all gymnastics events during the 2016 Summer Olympics and all the wheelchair basketball games in the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Completed in 2007, the arena has a capacity of 14,981 for sporting events. In the past, it has also been the home several of UFC events and concerts.
The NBA announced in its press release that Varejao would be returning to play in front of his countrymen. However, Varejao’s contract is only partially guaranteed for next season and it’s possibly that he doesn’t return to Cleveland next season.
The other three teams participating are the Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets. The Nets and Kings will play each other in Shanghai and Beijing. The Spurs will first play Alba Berlin in Berlin, Germany and then Fenerbahçe Ülker Istanbul in Istanbul, Turkey. There will also be regular season games played overseas that have yet to be announced.
