Instant Reaction: Cleveland Cavaliers 102, Toronto Raptors 100

Final Outcome

After being up 14 at the half and blowing a big lead, the Cavs held off the Toronto Raptors, 102–100. Up two with seven seconds left, Anderson Varejao threw away an inbounds pass, but the Cavs responded with a defensive stand and held on to beat the Raptors at the Q. Dion Waiters had 24 points (10  of 19 FG) and seven assists, Luol Deng scored 19 points (7 of 13 FG), six rebounds and seven assists and Tristan Thompson scored 15 points (9 of 10 FT) and grabbed 13 rebounds. Kyle Lowry had 22 points and 10 assists for the Raptors.

Key Play of the Game

After turning the ball over on the inbounds with about seven seconds left, the Cavs responded with a strong defensive sequence, bottling up Greivis Vasquez and preventing the Raptors from tying (and potentially winning) the game, staving off the Toronto comeback. A close runner-up for play of the game was when the Cavs fans sarcastically chanted “MVP” to Dion Waiters when he went to the free throw line.

Wine & Gold MVP

A number of Cavaliers had a good game, but I’m gonna go with Luol Deng for the Wine & Gold MVP. He contributed across the board, with 19 points, six rebounds and seven assists, but also shot a good percentage (7 of 13 FG, 2 of 4 3FG). He also hit a three-pointer at the end of the 3rd quarter that really helped to stem the tide when the Raptors were making a huge run against the Cavs.

The Cavs will travel to Detroit to face the 26–44 Pistons in “the battle for the better lottery pick.” Their division rivals have been in a skid as of late, losing five of their last six. As always, the Cavs will have to be wary of the tough Pistons’ interior of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.
