The league granted Brooklyn a disabled player exception due to the injury of Brook Lopez, and the Nets can absorb Hill’s contract despite being over the luxury tax. As Wojnarowski mentions, due to the punitive luxury tax, this will cost the team another $17M at the end of the year.
The Lakers are also rumored to be talking with other teams in regards to a trade involving Hill, but the Nets seem to be the most prominent destination as of right now. It’s unclear whether the Lakers would get anything in return, but they would likely just dump Hill’s contract.
