The Sacramento Kings recently traded for Rudy Gay, and he has played significantly better than he did with the Toronto Raptors. The Phoenix Suns are expected to make some kind of a deal to improve their roster before the trade deadline, and Gay is apparently a name of interest.
It’s no secret at this point that the Suns are searching for a star to take their shockingly-good season to yet another level, and as was first reported by ESPN, they’re currently considering the question of whether or not the Los Angeles Lakers’ Pau Gasol is that player. But if that deal or any other doesn’t happen, here’s one player to watch when free agency rolls around in July: Rudy Gay.
The Sacramento Kings small forward has a player option for next season worth $19.3 million, and the Suns are expected to have serious interest if he decides to opt out.
Gasol has become the primary target for the Suns, but with the Lakers posturing, Phoenix seems to be setting up some backup plans. Why Gay would be of any interest is a little bit of a head-scratcher. His market value is slightly higher now than it was in Toronto, so the Kings would likely ask for an attractive pick in return. The Suns would also have to match his pretty hefty salary. Either way, we can expect a lot of different names to be connected with the Suns over the coming weeks.
