Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving to defend three-point title

 

Kyrie Irving will defend his three-point title on All-Star Weekend the NBA announced Thursday night. The 2014 Foot Locker Three-Point contest takes place on All-Star Saturday night on Feb. 15 in New Orleans. From the press release:

In 46 games this season, Irving has averages of 21.4 points (5th in East), 3.2 rebounds, 6.2 assists (8th in East) and 1.3 steals in 35.2 minutes per game. He owns the highest scoring average among Eastern Conference point guards (second among all NBA point guards) and is one of only three players in the NBA with averages of at least 21.0 points and 6.0 assists per game in 2013-14 (Stephen Curry and LeBron James, min. 30 games). Irving is shooting .354 (81-229) from beyond the arc this season. He has 14 games of at least three triples made and seven contests of at least four made shots from deep. Since entering the NBA in 2011-12, Irving holds a career three-point percentage of .381.

Irving had openly declared that he wanted to defend his title this week in the media as well.

Irving on the contest last year by defeating San Antonio Spurs center Matt Bonner in the finals, scoring a 23 out of 30 in the final round.

This year, the third year pro will be going up against a stacked field that includes some of the NBA’s elite shooters. The field is as follows: Irving, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love (the 2012 champion), Orlando Magic guard Aaron Afflalo, Brooklyn Nets guard Joe Johnson, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (who completed last year), Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal, San Antonio Spurs wing Marco Bellinelli and Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard (who is competing in all five skill events on All-Star Weekend).
