The Los Angeles Lakers have won just three games in their last 19 contests, and are very close to hitting rock-bottom in the Western Conference standings. Pau Gasol is perhaps more known for his calm demeanor and ability to stay poised, but even he snapped after the Lakers’ recent loss to the Orlando Magic.
According to ESPN, Pau blew up in the locker room, cursing at teammates. These things are relatively common when adversity hits hard, although it is a little surprising coming from Gasol. Kobe Bryant has always been in his Spanish teammate’s corner, and he supported his recent behaviour as well.
“That’s the most irritated I’ve seen Pau in a long long time,” said Bryant. “I haven’t really seen him come in and have a tantrum in the locker room which is good, good, something that needs to be done. Can’t be something where losing becomes accepted or the whole ‘we gave it a good effort’ sort of thing. We don’t do that around here. That is not what it’s about. It is not about giving good effort. It is about winning a championship.”
Gasol himself has been playing well this year, and has bounced back well after an injury-filled 2012-13 season. He has especially picked it up in the Lakers’ last eight games, and he is putting up 21.6 points and 12.1 rebounds per game in that stretch.
Kobe is still sidelined, but even when he returns, he won’t be able to salvage what has been a tough season for the Lakers. At this point, the season can’t end any quicker and the team will look to rebuild in the offseason.
