Greg Oden has worked his way back onto an NBA court, after the Miami Heat provided him with an opportunity to take his time down in South Beach. While he seems to be on his way back up, there was a point in time when the former No. 1 overall draft pick considered calling it a career, before he even turned 25.

Greg Oden admits it: He considered retiring before he turned 25. He, too, wondered if his ongoing knee problems would allow him to play basketball again.

Watching Oden go through so many setbacks was painful for everyone, not only Portland Trail Blazers fans. He will never reach his initial potential, but the fact that he is even on an NBA court after not playing in a single game since 2009 is a blessing in itself.

The Heat have been very patient with Oden, and although he did play a couple of brief minutes in pre-season, he continued rehab work until now. Miami will likely keep him on a very tight leash, and Erik Spoelstra only really puts him on the floor for very short stints. He played a season-high 10 minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds.
