NBA Trade Rumors — With Rajon Rondo back on the basketball court and slowly rounding into playing shape, several teams around the league are ready to pounce if the Boston Celtics decide to put their All-Star point guard on the market. One of those teams could be the Detroit Pistons.
The Pistons have always been enamored with Rondo, the ultimate facilitator and competitor. And though Detroit has Brandon Jennings, he’s not necessarily viewed as a long-term option at point guard.
The Pistons’ experiment with the Greg Monroe-Andre Drummond-Josh Smith frontcourt has so far failed quite miserably and while they might not be actively shopping any of their players, the belief seems to be that Monroe isn’t exactly untouchable. However, Matt Dery provided this little tweet:
Rondo deal here? Don’t hold your breath. Ainge will want Drummond or a first round pick from #Pistons. The rest of the talk is nonsense.
Dery is probably right. While Monroe is a very talented big man, he is headed towards restricted free agency this summer and whether or not he wants to stick with the Boston Celtics through a rebuilding project is unclear. There is practically no chance in the world that Drummond will ever become available and teams are very cautious when giving up first-round picks since the signing of the new collective bargaining agreement.
One way or another, the Pistons’ roster, as currently constructed, simply doesn’t seem to fit and regardless whether they try to swing a deal for Rondo or not, they’ll likely be open to phone calls the closer we get to the trade deadline.
