Matthew Dellavedova to start at shooting guard Friday night, C.J. Miles out with right calf sprain

Head coach Mike Brown isn’t quite ready to insert Dion Waiters back into the starting lineup, and for good reasons. Because of his effort off of the pine over the past two games, Delly has earned the start in New Orleans tonight against the Pelicans. It will be the rookie’s first start of his NBA career.

Dellavedova has played in six of 11 games for the Wine & Gold this season, averaging 2.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 13.8 minutes. Over the past two games he has logged 31 and 27 minutes against the Washington Wizards on the road and at home respectively, tallying 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals, while shooting 37.5 percent from three.

In the home contest against the Wizards, Brown said that Dellavedova was the only player who showed effort on the court in a losing effort. His hustle on the defensive end allowed the team to claw back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wiz 32-18.

Dion Waiters returned with a bench role on Wednesday as well, shooting 2-of-13 from the field and scoring 11 points. Despite seeing 30 minutes of court time off the bench, it was a rough night for Dion, but, I wouldn’t mind seeing him in this role in the future, because the shooting will come to him eventually.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at New Orleans Arena.
