NBA Trade Rumors — Orlando Magic not hesitant to move Jameer Nelson
One name that has certainly been tossed around the in the trade rumor circuit is Jameer Nelson. After drafting Victor Oladipo, the Magic announced that they were considering playing Victor Oladipo at the point, silly as that may be. That would certainly make Nelson expendable and allow Orlando to continue developing their young players. According to ESPN, the Magic are looking for a first-round pick in return for the veteran point guard.
The Magic, according to the latest rumbles, would surrender Nelson today if offered a future first-round pick for him. Orlando GM Rob Hennigan continues to chase draft picks and young assets above all else as he remakes the Magic.
The problem is that teams have never been more reluctant to surrender first-round picks — and the cap-friendly contracts they carry — than we see nowadays. Even a proven point guard like Nelson, who’s making a reasonable $8.6 million this season and is owed only $2 million guaranteed next season, could struggle to command one in return.
The Magic are looking at a high-lottery pick in next summer’s loaded draft class, and Hennigan would obviously love to load up on first-rounders. As the piece above suggests, first-round picks are not as easy to come by as they used to be, and it remains to be seen whether Orlando can find Jameer a new home.
