The Brooklyn Nets opted to rest all five of the team’s projected starters in Wednesday’s loss to the Boston Celtics, including Deron Williams. The Nets’ point guard has only just began to participate in full-contact practices and is on his way back. However, he has not played a single preseason game and it seems that he could miss the regular season opener.
Deron Williams didn’t play again in Boston on Wednesday, just as he didn’t in the five previous preseason games for the Nets. Though he and the Nets have been very pleased with his progression over the past several days from a sprained right ankle that he suffered last month, Williams admitted it could be “tough” to make it back in time for next Wednesday’s regular-season opener in Cleveland because of how little he has done on the court so far this preseason.
It would certainly have been nice for Williams to get a couple of preseason games under his belt and, more than anything, get a feel for his new teammates on the court. Instead Williams, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and the others will have to develop on-court chemistry as the season progresses.
