Cavaliers exercise options on Irving, Waiters, Thompson and Zeller

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced today that they have exercised the fourth-year options on guard Kyrie Irving and forward Tristan Thompson, as well the third-year options on center Tyler Zeller and guard Dion Waiters.

The moves were essentially formalities, as all players figure to be part of the core and/or trade chips moving forward. This also enables the Cavaliers to retain these players services at set prices and gives them a chance to further evaluate their progressions before they are due for any sort of long term contract extension.

However, don’t be surprise if Irving and Thompson are offered a extension next summer. This holds especially true for Irving, as he figures to receive a max extension from the Wine & Gold this summer in the same way Paul George was signed to a max deal this summer by the Indiana Pacers. The Cavaliers star averaged 22.5 points and 5.9 assists in his sophomore campaign last year, in which he made his first All-Star game. He also was the 2011 NBA Rookie of the Year.
