1997 – Without much warning, North Carolina Tar Heels Hall of Fame Head Coach Dean Smith announced his retirement from basketball, surprising the sports world. He finished his coaching career with the most 20-win seasons in Division I history (30). In addition, he led his teams to 35 consecutive seasons with at least a .500 record.
