Derrick Rose finally made his return to the basketball court on Saturday, as the Chicago Bulls beat the Indiana Pacers in the preseason opener. Just about every NBA fan was curious to see how Rose would look after being out for over a year and the former MVP did not disappoint.
Prior to the game, Tom Thibodeau said that he would play Rose in three 6-8 minute stints to ease him into playing shape. That’s exactly what happened, as Rose was held to just over 20 minutes of playing time.
A lot of the time Rose looked rusty, turning the ball over four times, but that is to be expected. What was most impressive about Rose’s performance was perhaps not his 13 points but how he got them. Rose looked like his former self and it certainly didn’t seem like he had lost a step — he was racing past his opponents in explosive fashion and had some great finishes around the rim.
While Rose is still a bit off from reaching his MVP-type numbers and play, the game against Indiana was very encouraging to Bulls fans.
In a very defense-oriented game, Taj Gibson led the Bulls to a 82-76 victory, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
