NBA Trade Rumors – The Orlando Magic decided to draft Victor Oladipo in this summer’s NBA draft, which could potentially make Jameer Nelson expendable.
The Magic decided to let Oladipo play the point guard position during summer league and liked the raw potential that was on display. Oladipo was making mistakes and turned the ball over relatively frequently, but he does possess unique athleticism and above all he is a lockdown defender. Oladipo might not be a starting caliber point guard just yet, but he does have an incredibly high ceiling and Orlando has more than enough time to develop him.
This naturally means that Nelson could be up for grabs the closer we get to the February trade deadline. Orlando Sentinel has the following:
Nelson finds himself in a precarious situation — and not just because of Oladipo’s presence. Nelson is in the second season of a three-year contract that is guaranteed for only $2 million in 2014-15. That low amount, combined with his playoff experience and his skill on offense, should make him a popular player for other teams as the NBA trade deadline approaches on Feb. 20.
“I’m just here right now,” Nelson said. “That’s my goal: to be here as long as I can. Like I said in past years, I love it here and I definitely would like to stay. I understand things happen and it’s a business. Right now, I’m here and my job is to help lead and to help get these guys where we need them to be as a team and as an organization.”
Nelson has truly been through it all with his current team. Nine years into his career — all with the Magic — Nelson has been through all the possible highs and lows of a franchise. He helped the team reach the NBA finals and also lived through Dwight Howard’s departure. The Magic have been committed to Nelson, but for a young team in the making it’s not uncommon for seasoned veterans to hit the market as the team looks for younger players.
