After finalizing the deal with Nikola Pekovic, the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to start the 2013-14 NBA season with a clean slate. The team’s roster is certainly capable of playoff contention, but two players in particular need to step up according to Wolves GM Flip Saunders.

Guys like Lexey and Derrick can go one of two ways. This is a man’s league and there are three things they don’t do in this league: They don’t ask for your I.D. to see how old you are. They don’t ask to see your paycheck. And they don’t look at your Wikipedia page to see what you’ve done in the past. You’ve got to produce. Players determine how much they play. If they play well, they’re going to play. If they don’t, they’re not going to play.

Williams’ struggles to assert himself in the league have been well-documented, as the former No. 2 overall pick has not quite lived up to the expectations. He has reportedly been on the trading block but has stayed with the team thus far. Alexey Shved had an acceptable rookie season, but he proved to be very inconsistent and that is certainly something he will have to address in order to keep his minutes.
