The Houston Rockets landed the biggest free agent of the summer by luring Dwight Howard into town. While his arrival in Houston generally carried a positive vibe around the franchise, one player was certainly not particularly happy about the signing — Omer Asik.
It didn’t take long for trade rumors to surface that Asik was worried about his playing time and wanted to be traded rather than playing limited minutes behind Howard. However, it seems that the Rockets are not inclined to pull the trigger on a trade just yet, and instead are willing to experiment with playing both players at the same time.
Daryl Morey had the following to say in his reddit AMA:
Coach McHale plans to experiment with Dwight at PF and Omer as C in training camp. If it works and helps us win, obviously we would look at using it.
Now, experimenting with it and actually making it work on an NBA court is two very different things. The two players would be great rebounders, but the floor would inevitably shrink as both players are unable to play away from the basket. Other viable options for the power forward position could be Donatas Motiejunas or Terrence Jones.
