Cavs Hire Jim Boylan as Lead Assistant

Even with the draft hogging most of the NBA headlines today, the Cavaliers did make a splash in another way, by hiring former Bulls and Bucks assistant Jim Boylan to be Mike Brown’s lead assistant. Boylan, who spent most of last season as the Bucks interim head coach after Scott Skiles resigned from the team, has a wealth of previous experience as an assistant and head coach on a variety of levels. He has been a head coach at the college level, coaching at New Hampshire from 1989-1992, and has spent time as an assistant with the Grizzlies, Suns, Hawks, Bulls, and Bucks in the NBA. He also has experience with the team as a Cavs scout from 92-97.

Boylan does have a solid reputation as a lead assistant, performing that duty for the Bulls and Bucks, and was instrumental in the development of Ersan Ilyasova and Larry Sanders in Milwaukee. He’s a pretty decent defensive mind, which should go along with Mike Brown’s goals as well. However, Boylan has a track record of not being a good coach for offense. The highest a team Boylan has been a part of has ranked in offensive efficiency has been 13th with the 2011-12 Bucks, and the Bucks averaged placing 22nd in offensive efficiency over his time there. This somewhat scares me that he will be paired with the offensively unimaginative Mike Brown, but he’s a defensive mind, and that’s what the Cavs need more than offensive help.

This locks up the Cavaliers coaching staff for next season; Head Coach Mike Brown, lead assistant Jim Boylan, offensive coordinator Igor Kokoskov, assistant Phil Handy, and player development coach Vitaly Potapenko. *Not to be confused with former Utah Utes head coach and current Indiana Pacers assistant Jim Boylen. We got the one with the “a” in his last name.
