Chicago Bulls Didn't Want Derrick Rose To Play

Chicago Bulls’ medical staff gave Derrick Rose a medical clearance and he was expected to return sometime after the All-Star break. However, the young superstar didn’t end up playing this season, and it seems that the Bulls preferred it that way.

Since Rose was cleared, many criticized him for not playing, despite the fact that the Bulls organization was supportive of Derrick and happy with him making a decision on his own. Even when the NBA Playoffs started, Rose would not come out and say that he was not going to play this season, which perhaps upset fans even more. While Derrick was still hopeful of making a return, it seems as though the Bulls organization didn’t want him to play and urged him to formally announce that he was shutting down for the season.

John Calipari, Rose’s college coach, said (via ProBasketballTalk):

I’ve talked to Chicago Bulls management, I know all those guys… and you know what? They’re fine. They didn’t want him to go back. As a matter of fact, they wanted to announce he wasn’t coming back, but Derrick didn’t want to do it because he thought if there is any chance for me to come back…

Clearly, Rose was still hopeful he could potentially play, but down the stretch of the postseason, it became blatantly obvious that he would not play. After having missed one year of action, there was no way he was going to come back and play against the Miami Heat in the playoffs, especially when most of the Bulls’ roster was banged up.
