Phil Jackson NOT Joining Toronto Raptors

Apr 2, 2013; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Phil Jackson looks on as the jersey of Los Angeles Lakers former player Shaquille O

Former legendary head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls, Phil Jackson, will not be joining the Toronto Raptors organization. It has been rumored for a while that Jackson is looking for a job in the NBA, and would like a leading role in a front-office. The Raptors have been linked with Phil several times over the past few weeks, but it looks like it is not meant to be.

According to Michael Grange, who covers Toronto-related sports for SportsNet, Jackson will not join the Raptors:

It is understandable that the Raptors wanted to get their hands on such a prominent figure in the basketball world, but it doesn’t look like it will happen. It is still uncertain of what Jackson will do. He has been highly coveted among teams who are looking for a new coach, with Brooklyn Nets reportedly offering him the head coaching job. However, Jackson is said to have no interest in coaching again.

Did anyone seriously think Jackson would join the Raptors, that’s laughable. I stopped watching the Raptors long ago, when I realized that they have no chance of ever signing a decent player (none of them want to play in Canada) . Also when the draft well and develop there own talent they just end up losing them, the first opportunity they get to leave for a US based team, they do. I may sound bitter but it’s just my opinion. I think their chances to succeed are slim, as long as they can’t lure big time free agents North of the Border.

Yes, it was a long shot to begin with. The Raptors have very little cap flexibility moving forward as well, and since Phil isn’t getting any younger he would probably prefer a franchise that he can reshape from top to bottom.
