Vinny Del Negro and the Los Angeles Clippers saw their title hopes end as early as the first round of the playoffs, following four straight losses to the gritty Memphis Grizzlies. Another thing that might come to an end this summer is Del Negro’s head coaching tenure with the team.
When a team such as the Clippers makes an early postseason exit, a lot of things have to be evaluated before the next season. Why did the team fall short? Where can improvements be made? One question that is always of high priority is whether the head coach got the most out of his team. You can blame the players all you want, but the coach is always the most expendable part of an NBA franchise, and if Vinny’s seat was hot before, it is now in flames.
Del Negro has had to sustain a lot of criticism. His in-game decision are often questionable to say the least and he is frequently outcoached by the opposition.
At the end of the day, this situation is rather unique. Vinny’s fate is quite literally in the hands of Chris Paul. The point god will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that a first-round exit won’t help the Clippers retain their superstar. Paul isn’t blind. He knows that Vinny is not a particularly competent coach and could very well ask for a replacement if he was to stay. Even if CP3 leaves town, Del Negro’s job is not safe.
Many are already calling for Del Negro’s head. What do you think? Should the Clippers cut ties? Vote below.
