Russell Westbrook underwent surgery today, in order to repair the torn meniscus that he suffered in game two against the Houston Rockets. It is now confirmed that he will miss the rest of the 2013 NBA playoffs.

Before the surgery, it was unclear how quickly Westbrook could recover. Metta World Peace, of the Los Angeles Lakers came back from the injury in just 12 days, which offered the Oklahoma City Thunder fans some hope. As the type of procedure was unclear until today, no one really knew how serious the injury was.

This is obviously devastating news for all Thunder fans and the organization itself, as it is hard to see the team advancing to the NBA finals without their explosive point guard. However, this is a smart move. Westbrook, Serge Ibaka and Kevin Durant are all locked into long-term contracts, and forcing Russell into a premature comeback could have jeopardized his long-term health.
