Only a couple of days ago, it was reported that Andrea Bargnani, of the Toronto Raptors, called his team the worst in the NBA. Bargnani has now claimed that he was misquoted.
In an interview with Italian media, the injured forward reportedly vented his disappointment with his team’s poor start to the season. In response, Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey said that it didn’t sound like something Bargnani would say, and that the comment might very well have been lost in translation.
According to NBA.com, this is how Bargnani’s comments were translated in the Italian newspaper:
“Nothing has worked from the beginning of the season. We are pretty much the worst team in the NBA. This summer’s moves in the market were made to build a winning team, but we are not winning.
“We are below all of the expectations. No one is used to playing with anyone. We have won four games: it’s a tragic thing. Whatever way you look at it, it is a desperate situation. Since four years ago, we have kept losing. To improve, the only thing we can do is to win, and for now, we have not.”
It certainly seems like a weird statement from a player who doesn’t have a history of being particularly outspoken. Bargnani is now claiming that he was misquoted, while the journalist that conducted the interview is saying otherwise.
It is hard to figure out who is being truthful about what was said. Bargnani has been the target of a lot of grief, for not living up to the hype that comes with being selected as the first pick in the NBA draft. Perhaps it’s not inconceivable that the Italian forward, who is also sidelined with an elbow and wrist injury, let the frustration tip over.
Regardless of whether Bargnani said what is being reported, the statement was quite accurate, as the Raptors have a 5-19 record at the moment. Only the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Washington Wizards have a worse record in the NBA.
