The Miami Heat’s elder statesman and their least sung hero Juwan Howard is still undecided over his future.
Howard is 39 years old and has played 18 seasons at the highest level after being drafted from the famous ‘Fab Five’.
He has jumped around every time zone, every environment, but Howard may still have something left.
“I still have the itch. I still have the passion and the love for the game. More importantly, I still like staying in shape and I can’t sit on my behind. I’m still iffy as far as if I want to come back and play or not, but I’ll tell you one thing — once I decide, I want to be ready. So I am working out … ready for whatever happens.”
The Heat have filled 13 of their 15 roster spots thus far and it was not expected Howard would return. Whilst he very seldom played, his influence and importance was unquestioned. During their Championship clinching Game 5, the team agreed that if they could hold a sizeable advantage, that they would take out their starters to give minutes to players like Howard.
I still fully expect Howard to retire. He has nothing left to give and nothing left to achieve.
He seems now rush to make that decision though…
“This is a special moment, a special time for this team. I’m still smiling, every day. Walking around throughout the city, people of course are patting you on the back, they’re so proud of this past season and our accomplishments. But now it’s time for us to really look back on what has happened throughout the season, be proud of all the hard work we put into it.”
Take as long as you want.
