In what may be the first ominous sign of Miami going back to back, the greatest shooter in the history of the game has taken his talents to South Beach in search of championships.
Allen has been one of, if not the most pursued free agent, with teams such as Boston, Miami, Los Angeles and Memphis among the bigger name teams interested in his unique services. The list was constantly changing but the one team that did remain was the Miami Heat, and they eventually got their man.
This is another achievement for the master architect Pat Riley to put on his resume, after pulling off the greatest free agency coup of all time in the summer of 2010. Should the Heat win a handful of rings as they currently are, he will go down as the greatest basketball mind in the history of the game.
Allen fits a need on every team, but for Miami who have uncertainty over certain wing positions, particularly the status of Finals hero Mike Miller, the three point king will be hugely effective. The Heat have mastered the small lineup, playing LeBron at the 4 and sometimes even the 5, allowing for several shooters on the floor to give James and Wade room in the paint. Ray Allen will not be asked to do much other than his normal game, run off screens and hit threes.
This is going to be fun.
