Daniel Gibson Must Improve His Offensive Game

Daniel Gibson has improved this season. You need only watch him play on the defensive end of the floor. The Daniel Gibson we have seen on defense is dramatically better than the player we have seen in the past.

He has gone from a player considered to be trade bait, to a major contributor of an excellent bench unit. But for Gibson to continue to improve, he must become smarter at the offensive end of the floor. Yes everyone has seen him make three point shots. Everyone has seen him make big shots at key moments in big games. But he also takes too many shots behind the three point line. And it has made him a one dimensional player on offense.

First of all, Gibson should drive to the basket more. Kyrie Irving does an amazing job driving to the rim. Many of the Cavs do this as well. Gibson has shown the ability to drive the lane in the past. But for some reason, he doesn’t seem to want to do it most of the time. He’d rather be out taking jump shots. And even if he wants to take those jump shots, he can move inside the three point line. I don’t see Gibson taking mid-range jump shots hardly at all. If he could take more of those kind of shots, his field goal percentage and point totals would go up dramatically I think.

Gibson has taken himself out of the trade conversation for now. But he needs to keep growing to make sure he isn’t traded in the future. He could be a major piece going forward. Or he could be just another three point shooter who can’t do much more offensively. He’s improved his defense dramatically. Now it’s time to improve his shot selection.
