The Cavs Report : Preseason Game 2 vs Detroit Pistons

The Cavs fell to the Detroit Pistons at Quicken Loans Arena by a score of 90-89. But overall, there was more to talk about then just the final score. The Cavs appeared to play much better than they did at Auburn Hills. Kyrie Irving had 21 points with three assists and Tristan Thompson had eight points with five rebounds. Both players came off the bench as Ramon Sessions and Antawn Jamison started in front of them respectively.

But all the talk with surely be about small forward Omri Casspi. The young man from Israel played in his first preseason game as Cavalier and did not disappoint. For the game, he had 18 points and five rebounds. He also made some excellent defensive plays. At the end of the game, Casspi may have cost the game with a bad inbound pass. However, it is only a preseason game and will most likely be practicing in bounds passes going forward to make sure this will not happen again. It will be interesting to watch Casspi play. He was acquired from Sacramento in the JJ Hickson trade. If he can step up and play well, it may turn into a great trade.

Daniel Gibson also played well. In 24 minutes of play, he had five points, four rebounds and four assists. He was very active on the floor and the Cavs will need him to make an impact once the regular season starts. Not playing tonight was Christian Eyenga and Samardo Samuels. Eyenga had a very bad game in Auburn Hills and was probably not played because of it. Of course, he also may have been held out to allow Casspi more playing time. The presence of Samuels was missed tonight. His aggressive style of play will be needed going forward.

As the Cavs prepare for their regular season opener on December 26th, it is easy to believe that while the Cavs may start out sluggish, they will dramatically improve as the season progresses. Irving appears to be everything he has been advertised to be and maybe a little more. Thompson appears to be growing as a NBA power forward. Casspi will most likely be the team’s starting small forward, which will allow Gee to bring energy off the bench. It should be fun to watch this team grow. It may be hard at times to watch, but it appears as if the Cavaliers are headed in the right direction heading into the regular season.
