Kobe finally broke his off season silence last week when he did an interview with ESPN following an appearance at the MLS All Star soccer game. Of course the story of the Heat’s Finals failures and LeBron James made their way into the discussion. Bryant offered a surprisingly rational response.
“I think people need to lay off that kid, that’s what I think. I’ve gotten to know him pretty well, playing with the Olympic team, and I think they just need to back off him and just let him play and let him live his life and let him make his decision and let him mature as a player.”
Bryant has offered public support for James in the past, which is not surprising given the genuine friendship the two have off the court, but Bryant is never one to miss an opportunity to smack talk an opponent, especially one of the magnitude of the Miami Heat and LeBron James.
“It’s tough to be under a microscope like that all the time. So, I would like everybody to just back off of him and just let him play.”
It’s really been a slow few months for the NBA and the lockout is only going to make it worse, so this really is a non story, something that would hold no influence had we not been in this current situation.
We all know Bryant is right and deep down everyone really does want to just leave the guy alone because no one doubts he is a nice human being, but America is way too stubborn and would much rather convey insurmountable hate than unwavering gratitude so this is the situation we are in.
