The media, the fans, most of the players and coaches have fairly unanimously agreed that Derrick Rose is the MVP of the 2010/2011 season. Rose has led his Bulls to the top record in the East, the first time the Chicago have done this since the retirement of the great one.
On the season Rose is averaging 24.9 points, 7.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds.
Yet to me Derrick Rose, at least at this very moment, will go down as the worst MVP of all time. Rose may well go on to a Hall of Fame career and may add several championships to Jordan’s 6 that fill Chicago’s trophy cabinet, but until that happens he is greatly unworthy of entering the record books with the former MVP recipients.
Adbul Jabbar, Johnson, Jordan, Russell, Barkley, Pettit, Chamberlain, Reed, McAdoo, Robertson, Walton, Malone, Irving Bird.
More recently Duncan, Bryant, Nowitzki, Nash, O’Neal, Garnett, James.
When you look at each of those names you immediately think of the greatest set of players in the history of the game of basketball. All champions in their own right. All deserve their own wings in the Hall of Fame.
To the end of that you put Derrick Rose, and honestly I feel sick.
Despite the many of you that say the MVP award means nothing, that it is an unjust award and that the players do not take it as seriously as they do in other sports. To you I say have a look at the list of the history of the award and tell me one player that will not make the Hall of Fame and who has honestly never been the best player in the league at least one season of their career. You cannot.
Until now.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an article hating on Derrick Rose. He is a sensational talent and can do things that point guards shouldn’t be able to do.
Yet the fact Rose will join the names I mentioned above, at least at this stage of his career, is beyond acceptable.
Rose in his third season in the NBA isn’t half as valuable as LeBron James in his third season of the NBA. The difference? Rose’s Bulls have a better record now than James did in his first 4 seasons in the league. Joakim Noah? Carlos Boozer? Hell Luol Deng? James had nothing of the sort yet he took his team to heights it had no right to reach. Detroit fans know what I’m talking about.
Rose has a dream supporting cast. He has a perennial 20 point 10 rebound veteran inside in Carlos Boozer. A hybrid, new age center with the energy of an 8 year old in Joakim Noah. Shooters and scorers around him such as Deng, Korver and Brewer. Yet Derrick Rose averages less than 8 assists per game?
Put Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash or Rajon Rondo in his place I guarantee they will average over 10 assists per game, if not more than 12. The very nature of the point guard position is to run the team and distribute to teammates, and there is no excuses as to why Rose cannot do this.
You will say he is a scoring point guard, which he somewhat is, but he is not nearly as good at that either. Rose averages just under 25 points per game, good right? No.
That is the highest points per game of any point guard in the league, highest since Allen Iverson. Rose ranks 7th in the league in scoring. But what absolute baffles me is that he has taken the second most shots in the league.
YOU’RE A GOD DAMNED POINT GUARD!
For those of you that say he has become a good shooter now, I say shut up.
Rose averages an abysmal 44% from the floor, and just 33% from 3. Tell me where in that you can see that he is a good shooter.
44% from the floor for a point guard who has taken the second most amount of shots in the league…what do you even say to that.
Derrick Rose is a hog. He is a dead set ball hog. Kobe Bryant might be one, but Kobe Bryant has earnt everything he has received, and the fact Derrick Rose is about to tie Kobe for MVP awards is a tragedy. Say what you will about the MVP award and its inability to award the truly worthy, but none who have received it have been anything lower than a first ballot Hall of Famer. Also Kobe is not a point guard. A POINT GUARD.
The media and the people have jumped on this bandwagon because of the highlight plays he produces.
Oh my god he crossed someone over give him the MVP! Wow he can dunk two handed he must be the best player in the league!
We have honestly come to the point where the Sportscenter Top 10 is a legitimate analytical system in judging a player’s value.
Derrick Rose is only a few weeks from being named the MVP of the NBA for 2010/2011 season. If Rose had received this award perhaps in his 5th or 6th season when he had established himself as the clear leader at his position I would not feel compelled to write this. But it is truly a abomination to the award that he will be receiving it.
Michael Jordan. Kareem Abdul Jabber. Magic Johnson. Larry Bird. Shaquille O’Neal. Tim Duncan. Oscar Robertson. Wilt Chamberlain. Kobe Bryant. LeBron James. Derrick Rose?
What a disgrace.
