Derrick Rose: The Worst MVP Ever?

by LeBron James

The media, the fans, most of the players and coaches have fairly unanimously agreed that Derrick Rose is the MVP of the 2010/2011 season. Rose has led his Bulls to the top record in the East, the first time the Chicago have done this since the retirement of the great one.

On the season Rose is averaging 24.9 points, 7.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds.

Yet to me Derrick Rose, at least at this very moment, will go down as the worst MVP of all time. Rose may well go on to a Hall of Fame career and may add several championships to Jordan’s 6 that fill Chicago’s trophy cabinet, but until that happens he is greatly unworthy of entering the record books with the former MVP recipients.

Adbul Jabbar, Johnson, Jordan, Russell, Barkley, Pettit, Chamberlain, Reed, McAdoo, Robertson, Walton, Malone, Irving Bird.

More recently Duncan, Bryant, Nowitzki, Nash, O’Neal, Garnett, James.

When you look at each of those names you immediately think of the greatest set of players in the history of the game of basketball. All champions in their own right. All deserve their own wings in the Hall of Fame.

To the end of that you put Derrick Rose, and honestly I feel sick.

Despite the many of you that say the MVP award means nothing, that it is an unjust award and that the players do not take it as seriously as they do in other sports. To you I say have a look at the list of the history of the award and tell me one player that will not make the Hall of Fame and who has honestly never been the best player in the league at least one season of their career. You cannot.

Until now.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an article hating on Derrick Rose. He is a sensational talent and can do things that point guards shouldn’t be able to do.

Yet the fact Rose will join the names I mentioned above, at least at this stage of his career, is beyond acceptable.

Rose in his third season in the NBA isn’t half as valuable as LeBron James in his third season of the NBA. The difference? Rose’s Bulls have a better record now than James did in his first 4 seasons in the league. Joakim Noah? Carlos Boozer? Hell Luol Deng? James had nothing of the sort yet he took his team to heights it had no right to reach. Detroit fans know what I’m talking about.

Rose has a dream supporting cast. He has a perennial 20 point 10 rebound veteran inside in Carlos Boozer. A hybrid, new age center with the energy of an 8 year old in Joakim Noah. Shooters and scorers around him such as Deng, Korver and Brewer. Yet Derrick Rose averages less than 8 assists per game?

Put Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash or Rajon Rondo in his place I guarantee they will average over 10 assists per game, if not more than 12. The very nature of the point guard position is to run the team and distribute to teammates, and there is no excuses as to why Rose cannot do this.

You will say he is a scoring point guard, which he somewhat is, but he is not nearly as good at that either. Rose averages just under 25 points per game, good right? No.

That is the highest points per game of any point guard in the league, highest since Allen Iverson. Rose ranks 7th in the league in scoring. But what absolute baffles me is that he has taken the second most shots in the league.

YOU’RE A GOD DAMNED POINT GUARD!

For those of you that say he has become a good shooter now, I say shut up.

Rose averages an abysmal 44% from the floor, and just 33% from 3. Tell me where in that you can see that he is a good shooter.

44% from the floor for a point guard who has taken the second most amount of shots in the league…what do you even say to that.

Derrick Rose is a hog. He is a dead set ball hog. Kobe Bryant might be one, but Kobe Bryant has earnt everything he has received, and the fact Derrick Rose is about to tie Kobe for MVP awards is a tragedy. Say what you will about the MVP award and its inability to award the truly worthy, but none who have received it have been anything lower than a first ballot Hall of Famer. Also Kobe is not a point guard. A POINT GUARD.

The media and the people have jumped on this bandwagon because of the highlight plays he produces.

Oh my god he crossed someone over give him the MVP! Wow he can dunk two handed he must be the best player in the league!

We have honestly come to the point where the Sportscenter Top 10 is a legitimate analytical system in judging a player’s value.

Derrick Rose is only a few weeks from being named the MVP of the NBA for 2010/2011 season. If Rose had received this award perhaps in his 5th or 6th season when he had established himself as the clear leader at his position I would not feel compelled to write this. But it is truly a abomination to the award that he will be receiving it.

Michael Jordan. Kareem Abdul Jabber. Magic Johnson. Larry Bird. Shaquille O’Neal. Tim Duncan. Oscar Robertson. Wilt Chamberlain. Kobe Bryant. LeBron James. Derrick Rose?

What a disgrace.

Before you make an article like this I think you should read this article: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/654658-derrick-rose-the-surprisingly-historic-numbers-of-his-mvp-seeason. And your saying Lebron James like he won anything. In this league Lebron has won just as much as Rose and thats an MVP.

      1. To say “beyond Acceptance” means that you accept. To be legitimate media, learn how to write analytically first.
      2. Your website is named King James Gospel, so no matter who the recipient of the award is, you can never look at it objectively.
      3. You take this way too seriously

Check out that company. Why would a player so adept at scoring need to pass more than he already does? Derrick rose is second in the NBA in % of points generated for his team, right next to Lebron James.
Check out his clutch stats at 82games, which far surpass any other player in the NBA.
Check out his pts per possession allowed at my synergy which are also identical to lebrons.
Do you realize he has the lowest amount of 20+ pt games allowed among elite point guards?
I suppose not. You probably think he compares more to iverson’s MVP year when, statistically he is closer to kobe’s.
7% of MVP’s have gone to players 6’4”. Don’t be a part of continuing the bias. Rose is winning it on merits and is honestly having an MVP worthy season with or without wins.
Plus, don’t cite boozer and Noah when both have separately missed a quarter of the season, neither absence affecting the bulls.
It’s naive to say rose should pass more when he’s the only person in the NBA top ten in passing and scoring,
Try again and, when you do, leave your bron bias at the door.

  • Marcus

“Yet the fact Rose will join the names I mentioned above, at least at this stage of his career, is beyond acceptable.”

Careful, to say something is “beyond acceptable” means something is very acceptable. I believe you meant to write “beyond unacceptable.”

Also, just because you say, “Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an article hating on Rose.” doesn’t mean you can get away with hating on him. This entire article is solely hating on Rose:
“Derrick Rose is a hog. He is a dead set ball hog.” That’s pure hating.
“YOU’RE A GOD DAMNED POINT GUARD!” still hating.
“it is truly a abomination to the award that he will be receiving it.” hating.

You can’t try and hide your despise of Rose behind the “Don’t get me wrong” bit, but it’s pretty clear that you just hate the guy.

  • Robert Riley

your points don’t make sense bro, the award is based on the seasons work, not career….u say his supporting cast was better then Lebron’s well if you watch the games then maybe you’ll see why Rose takes the shots that he does, or how he is now a better shooter then his previous 2 years. You seem to be one of those guys that just don’t like when a new person comes in and takes the award from the veterans. You started your article off by saying you’re not hating on Rose, well you apparently didn’t proofread your own work because thats all I saw in this was hatred. So who do you give the mvp award to this year, compare numbers and see how far you get without putting Rose in the top 2. I normally don’t respond to articles like this, but being a REAL fan of the NBA you pissed me off with this one. A ball hog huh, ok, well 7.9 assist per game is pretty damn good seeing as how he is in the top 10 in the league, just saying. When his teammates miss shots or want to make that extra pass that takes at least two to three more assist away from him per game…you need to get your game up before you trash a solid NBA player who deserves the award. By the way, I feel like Kobe should’ve won more awards and yes he got cheated. But this is the 2010-2011 season and Rose gets the MVP!! Thanks anymore questions

  • ledouche

    OMG worst MVP eva!@!! Holla

  • Luis

He is not a ball hog. He is a point gaurd, so he get most possesion. Also, his shooting ability isnt great, but has improved. from 3pt, he shot i think at 28% and went to 33.3%. Also has taken more 3pointers this season compared to 32 combined for his last 2 seasons.. HE IS MVP. LEBRON EVEN SAID! JORDAN SAID! VAN GUNDY SAID. ALL VOTERS ALREADY MADE UP THEIR MIND. srry. :D

  • http://twitter.com/Mike_Kelso Tony Bowens

also another article if you think Rose doesn’t play D since everyone wants to use metric stats to down the future MVP. According to this you see Rose as one of the best if not the best defensive point guard of the elite.http://bleacherreport.com/articles/579582-derrick-rose-derron-williams-and-the-other-elite-point-guards-a-defensive-look

  • MacJuice

You know nothing and it almost seems like you don’t really watch Basketball. Knowing names doesn’t mean you know who’s good. Knowing Basketball does.

  • RG

lol stop hatin he deserves it

  • RG

if you think he aint good then why is he MVP?

  • http://www.zackdiliberto.com zack d

Man, Sam’s takin some heat for this article. I don’t like the typos. People should PROOF READ. You meant “beyond unacceptable”. But he does make some good points. Rose is having a great year. And he’s obviously leading his team to a great record. But I happen to think the MVP does mean something – more in the NBA than NFL imo. They get it right most of the time. But Sam’s right when he points out that Kobe only has one. I mean, ONE?????? He could be MVP every year. So could Jordan have been. But somehow it turns into sentimental favorites. Malone won it a couple of times when Jordan should have. Same with Barkley once. But in the playoffs, Jordan showed who the real MVP is. That’s what Kobe does too. I don’t think Rose is the best player this year – arguably not even top 5. That’s a problem. Sam’s got a point.

  • TylerT

How does this article get published? His hole arguemnt is that he only averages 8 assists per game. His 2000 point 600 assist season this year has been done by 2 players before. once by Lebron last year and once by Jordan.

  • DeToddi

Son, get off LeBron’s nuts! He hasn’t won anything but an MVP himself. Just as Nash and Iverson. Rose is only 22 years old, and he’s playing out of his mind. He deserves the MVP this year. He worked hard in the offseason on his game, and it shows. You probably don’t even watch games. You just look at the stat sheet after its over. Fuckin herb! Yo, when you’re done tattooing LeBrons name on your chest next to your nipple rings, try watching a few Bulls games. Huh?

  • Sicko

Rose been in the driver seat since the 1st Half of the season, I nobody has caught him or bumped him from that Driver Seat YET! To call him the “WORSE MVP EVER” is SO DISRESPECTFUL! It also sounds personal…DID Derrick Rose sleep with your wife or something? lol

2010/11 MVP Is DERRICK ROSE! You don’t have to like it, but it is absolutely NOTHING you can do about it but write your little articles and complain like a B!TCH

  • Derrick Rose Fan

    Player A: 31.1 PPG 4.6 APG 3.8 RPG

    Player B: 24.9 points, 7.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds.

Player A is Allen Iverson the year he won the MVP by a landslide. Player B is Derrick Rose’s numbers. I guess AI didn’t deserve his MVP either since he is a point guard?

  • Crivello7

Haha is this clown serious he’s leading the NBA in players leading there team in scoring and assists in a game 46 times next closest guy 31 deron Williams lol clown donu watch the games how many clutch shots in tights games has this guy made happen too Many to name how many has lebron had though so sounds like MVP to me stop hatin

  • Neil

Just like Lebron, his follower got to much too soon even thought he hasn’t won anything, these fans are like Yankee fans but they have no rings to back it up. I think you better take a good look at what basketball really is, Rose is a perfect example of what a basketball player is suppose to do, even if he doesn’t have a ring the man has taken full leadership of his team and knows he can’t just give up like Lebron vs the Celtics, do you remember? Even if Rose doesn’t get MVP we all know he should.

  • Truth

Obviously you have no sense of what the MVP title is since you are unable to see out past Lebron’s legs because you’re so far up his rear end. If you are so upset about Rose with his performance landing MVP then what does that say about the other players and, especially, James…. yeah. Get off his nuts.

  • kareem

Wow, this has to be the most fundamentally bias evaluation I have ever read. Your argument defies all logic and is completely opinion based. Here is future advice when you decide to blog ignorantly. State your position, don’t appeal to the reader’s sentiments “IM NOT HATING” (When clearly you are), state your facts and stand by them, and provide analysis off those facts.
Derrick Rose is the MVP and nothing you say or do will change that. Don’t compare him to other players, he is Derrick Rose and has asserted a game that fits his team which has lead to them being #1 in a very competitive Eastern Conference. He has dealt with a new roster, coach, injured team mates, and found ways to win.

  • joe

didnt steve nash win 2 MVPs? this article is completely flawed with that fact alone.

  • ceejay

Well i guess you’re gonna stay sick because he is gonna be mvp… and by the way what has lebron and nash won… you’re just a fun that doesnt know how to express your true love for derrick rose but it’s all good

  • KT

And I guess with all the people saying he is the MVP even the great Michael Jordan even Lebron himself it would seem you THINK you know more than everyone else.

Really and truly it’s why FREEDOM of speech should not be FREE cause in truth some people just simply BLEED from the gums without the mental capacity to have their brains join in.

The argument of his team is better can be joined by the fact that HE has made many of them better by his play. Sometimes when yuo are around greatness you play above your level.

Lets attack another one of your points. Supporting cast. Boozer – Although he is a great player his one weakness has impacted the Bulls on more than one ocassion this season and that the fact he is very fragile. Same goes for Noah, again a great player but fragile. Yet the Bulls seemed to never miss a beat no matter who went down.

Now lets’ get to the meat of the matter. He is the team leader on a team who is vying for the best record on the NBA. His team despite not having Lebron, Wade or Bosh still beat the stuffin out of the Heat 3 times this year. A perfect 3-0 vs the team that was to win it all.

Let’s look at how the Rose lead Bulls stacked up against the best the NBA had to offer:

    Celtics 2W – 2L – Split
    Heat 3W – 0L – Wipeout
    Magic 3W – 0L – Wipeout
    Hawks – 2W – 1L

    Spurs – 1W – 1L – Split
    Lakers – 1W – 1L – Split
    Thunder – 1W – 1L – Split
    Mavericks – 2W – 0L – Wipeout

So the Bulls stack up good to great against every godo team out there.

So you want to say that the Bulls have some phenominal team behind Rose why they are so good? Well when you throw in the fact that several of their key players were down for extended periods of time and backups, no namers had to fill their roles and the Bulls still rolled it must leave you with only one conclusion and that’s the Bulls are a better team because of Rose and if being a better team because of Rose leads them to the best record in the NBA then I must conclude that he is the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER (MVP) of the league.

So before you go hating on Rose grow a brain.

  • RT

I hope you don’t get paid to write such bad analysis.

You don’t think Derrick Rose’s name belongs with the other names? Let me point something out – Lebron hasn’t won a single championship either, and yet you don’t have a problem putting his name alongside MJ, Kobe, and the other greats. If you want to be consistent, then you should admit that Lebron is equally undeserving because he hasn’t done anything close to what the rest of those guys have done. I’ve seen plenty of arguments against Derrick Rose as MVP, but yours has to be the worst.

While we’re comparing him to Lebron – you think that Lebron did more with less when he was with Cleveland. Well, he’s on a better team now in Miami – and yet, he hasn’t even led the Heat to Cleveland’s record last year. So this whole argument about him doing more with less is bullshit, because this year he’s not even his own team’s MVP – Wade is.

And finally, what is your problem with Derrick Rose being a point guard and also scoring? He is in the TOP TEN in assists – no one in the TOP TEN in assists can be called a “ball hog.” He does BOTH – passes a lot and takes a lot of shots – because that is what the Bulls need him to do. The Bulls have no scoring shooting guard, and Boozer, Noah and Deng cannot create their own shots. Without Rose’s 25 points, the Bulls would be the Milwaukee Bucks – all defense, no offense. What makes Rose so valuable is his ability to do BOTH – passing and scoring.

Kid, I get that you don’t like Rose and you’re hurt that he’s outshining Lebron right now. But please, apply some logic to your arguments. Stop talking out of your ass.

  • KT

    RT

Lebron, Wade and Bosh have basically placed them in a position where no matter how well their team does they should almost be automatically removed from contention for this award.

When you have the 2nd, 3rd and 23rd leading scorer on one team it means you can have a night off and your team could still win and possibly win big. Other teams have to rely on their top scorer a lot more. Generally if their top scorer has a bad night it means a loss.

MVP means many things to many people but one of those that many people agree with is the Most Valuable Player to your team. With teams like Boston and Miami how can you CLEARLY say if someone is even the MVP of his team much less the league?

The next thing about past accomplishments is just STUPID. MVP has nothing to do with what you did in past years but what you did this year. It’s not even just about your stats although they play their role in the equation but also about the intengible things such as leadership or threat or simply about how you make your teamsmates better players.

Great players CREATE good players. Every Batman needs his Robin. MJ had Pippen, he even had Kukoc. These were guys that were decent players that he made good players. This is year 1 for this team and we need watch to see how this all plays out to see if this is the start of something special.

  • Old School Bulls Fan

2nd most shots in the league? How many were deep in the shot clock and he had to bail out the offense? Top 10 in the league in points. Not enough assists? Top 10 in the league. Ball Hog? Really?

  • Mike Albanese

I jacked off to this article

  • http://www.noshayahdamuzikbox.com MrDaMuzikbox

It’s quite obvious why you think so… hello? This is the “King James Gospel”. hahahaha It’s obvious your just a hater because your so called “King” didn’t impress people enough for him to win it. Derrick Rose’s help (Boozer & Noah) missed over 50 games combined, and the Bulls still have the #1 Seed? that’s HANDS DOWN MVP. Don’t be a hater. Just appreciate that the young man is that dominant. And they beat the Heat all 3 times for a sweep of the season series. MVP means most valuable player for their team, and in the NBA, out for who has inflated stats because they’re on a team that has “3 All-stars”… this article made me laugh. You should be ashamed of yourself for writing such a piece. It’s so obvious the unsportsmanlike attitude you have. Mind you, it’s obvious you don’t know a darn thing about what makes someone an MVP…

  • JT

okay first off, lemme start by saying derrick has to take that many shots. Look at our 2 guard. KIETH BOGANS! whos gonna do the shooting? Bogans whos averaging like 4 points a game? I think not. And he make take so many shots but then he still gets his almost 8 assists a game. He is far and away the MVP of the league this year without question. He and Tom took that team from a mere 41 and 41 to winning 60+ games and having the one seed in the eastern conference. Easy decision, Derrick Rose for MVP and Tom Thibodeau as coach of the year. No questions asked

  • AF

All you do is mention other’s names and expect the weight of their accomplishments to completely back up your argument. That’s ludicrous. You’re just like “Duncan, Bryant, Nowitzki, Nash, O’Neal, Garnett, James” without even backing them up. Rose’s shooting numbers may not blow your mind, but consider that in the first 3 weeks of the season, he made more threes than he had made his first two years COMBINED. Also consider that Boozer was out 30 games this season and Noah 35. Rose has had to carry the load on offense practically every night, this while meeting the demands of a coach that’s turned the Bulls into the best defensive team in basketball. Don’t believe me? Does having the lowest opponent FG% affect your decision? You’re clearly just a bigot who just pays attention to box scores and doesn’t watch the Bulls on a nightly basis to see just how much, in fact, Derrick Rose impacts the game. Kindly do go to hell.

  • http://www.nba.com ethanio

  • Keith Bogans

People please… He is playing the devil’s advocate and it got him published. He is just using a dirty journalism tactic.

Rose wasn’t on the Bulls then who would score? What team would be leading the East? Oh wait you already know. Hey Congrats on the extra website traffic, hope it was worth sacrificing the respect and credibility as a sports writer.

There’s no crying in basketball! – Except for the Miami Bleat, of course, and apparently their fans. LeBron NEEDS you, go get more kleenex… silly little boy.

  • Rich

Jordan,Rivers,KG,Pierce, LBJ, Hubie Brown, ( one of the most respected man in BB ) all have cast their vote for Rose. The haters are everywhere. NYT, etc. Folks that never played in the NBA. Who the F### is Sam McPhee? I found this absurd article via SI. Are you trying to be a Mariotti? See what happened to Jay? If the MVP award was based on talent alone, MJ would have won almost ever year. Same with Kobe and your god, LBJ. I never respond to haters, including the NYT’s article. But a dude that’s trying to make a living hating great players is worthy of my reply. I hope you have a day job Sam.

  • BULL4EVER

lebron is a totally bigger queen than a king, especially since he totally cheated basketball competition, not to mention Jordan never signed with the Celtics or the Lakers and D’Rose will stay in Chicago no matter what and he will give these Bulls quite a bit of NBA titles also, something Jordan once did.Rose will win NBA titles in Chicago no matter what, Lebron james won’t ever even win in Miami.GO BULLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Norb

What a HATER, wow dude, go buy some lebron jerseys and make yourself feel better, you obiviously haven’t watched Rose play this season, did you forget Boozer and Noah missed a majority of the season, Brewer a shooter…really? Dude go watch some basketball. Once the Bulls sign a SG this offseason then you’ll see his assists numbers jump.

  • BULL4EVER

Yo norb the Bulls won’t even be needing a point guard, especially when they win it all this season and beyond, and I have never at all even had make myself totally feel better, especially since I have always been a Bulls fan, instead of totally idiotic anti-BULLS who have done nothing besides hate these BULLS, totally jealous of them because they will win it all in 2011 and beyond, [not to mention] everyone who have always doubted that Chicago won’t ever win NBA titles after Jordan & Pippen, this and that bs all the time after they won their 6th and last NBA title in 1998.GO BULLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.affotd.com Jeff

“44% from the floor for a point guard who has taken the second most amount of shots in the league…what do you even say to that.”

Rose’s true shooting percentage is actually higher, since Rose shoots the majority of the desperation/buzzer shots for each quarter/half. It’s called not caring about stats, and caring about winning.

This article: Worst basketball article ever?

Bile trash. Complete waste of time reading this garbage. I’m no Rose fan and in fact think he’s not deserving this year. But if idiots like this author are on the same side, maybe I’m wrong. Rose for sure deserves it more than Lebum.

  • Zoro

This is actually the worst article I’ve ever read. The author states he isn’t hating on Rose but it’s obvious. He said give Rondo, D-wills, Nash, or Chris Paul that supporting cast……well Rondo has the big three an even better supporting cast and Rose embarrassed the C’s last week, Nash actually won the MVP twice and nobody complained,Chris Paul isn’t even worth mentioning this season, and D- Wills had boozer, korver, and brewer last season and didn’t do what the bulls are doing.Mj didn’t come close to a ring until he got the right players around him like another Hall of famer Pippen. I think Sam McPhee is just mad because Rose and the bulls swept lame old lebron and the heat. wade lebron and bosh wish they had what chicago has which is a real leader, a real team, and a real coach. Why does this guy have an article?

    • David Stern

Typical Bulls fan making excuses. Win a championship then we’ll see what’s up.

The article actually has a point that Rose shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as MJ, Kobe, or any other of the greats that have played the game.

  • bill sibert

I hear it takes you an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes. You sir…..are a moron!!!!

  • J2

Are you freaking kiding me! This is the worst article I have ever read. Rose lead his team to the best record in the NBA and improved his teams total wins by 21 from the last two years all will Booz and Noah have only played lest then 30 games together and with no SG. Bogans are you seriouse. Lebron has you know who and Paul had Ray Ray. You need to get your facts straight before you start post stupid shit like this. Go Bulls!! Rose MVP!!!

Wow….this is a horrible article…its coming from a miami sports person though so i should expect such nonsense….how did this guy even get a job this is probably one of the worst articles i have ever read….its new title should read WORST ARTICLE EVER….if u knew anything boozer has been injured and wasnt his same self as he was in utah….noah has been injured….no number 2 guard and brewer is not a jump shooter u turd…dont degrade rose bc he only gets 8 assists a game…maybe if he has shooters he would get more….also korver he has been ver inconsistent this year…..before u write one of the dumbest articles y dont u watch bulls games….also keep watching lebron throw up last second bricks to lose the game…..enjoy an early exit miami…THIS ARTICLE BLOWS

  • Nathan Hindmarsh

Are we really willing to Derrick Rose’s name next to Jordan, Kareem, Magic and others? That’s what this MVP thing is about and if (or rather when) he wins it that’s the question we gotta ask ourselves because I wouldn’t put him there yet.
