Buy or Sell: Manny Harris

As I have made fairly clear over the last few weeks, I’m a big fan of preseason basketball. I think you can learn a lot about a team by the way they come together and compete before the season even begins. Guys that wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to play are on the floor together and, for some of them, the exposure earns them a contract.

But, as much as I enjoy preseason basketball, I know that preseason statistics and records mean absolutely nothing when the regular season begins. There are guys whose stats get extremely inflated from the lack of stiff competition in some preseason match-ups.

And one of those guys just so happens to be Manny Harris.

Manny Harris – (19.6 mpg, 3.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 9.8 ppg)

First of all, I want to make sure everyone knows that Manny Harris is a product of the Michigan Wolverines. You know what that means? It means that, as a fan of Ohio State, I can’t possibly buy this guy as a valuable asset to this team until he proves me wrong.

Part of the reason I’m not buying Manny Harris as a regular contributor to the Cavaliers this season is because the Cavs are rather guard-heavy. Mo Williams, Daniel Gibson, Ramon Sessions and Anthony Parker will get a majority of the minutes in Scott’s run-and-gun system. However, if one of those guys goes down with an injury for a long period of time, Harris may pick up so valuable minutes.

Harris has shot the basketball at a relatively high percentage thus far in the preseason and has knocked down a majority of his three point attempts. At six feet-five inches and 185 pounds, Harris has an extremely wiry frame. And such a frame doesn’t bode well for him as he begins to take on guys much bigger, and much stronger than they were in college. Chances are he’ll get knocked around quite a bit in the few minutes he gets. Harris may be better suited for the D-League and the weight room at this point in his career.
