Thumbs Down

O'Neal will undergo surgery on Monday and will likely miss most of the remainder of the regular season.

After suffering a thumb injury in Thursday night’s matchup with the Boston Celtics, the Big Witness Protection traveled to Maryland on Sunday afternoon to meet with Dr. Thomas Graham at the National Hand Center in Baltimore.

O’Neal is now schedules to undergo surgery to repair the injured thumb on Monday.  His status will be updated following the surgery and a time table for his return will be set at that point.

However, according to Brian Windhorst via his Twitter account, the typical recovery time for the injury is anywhere from six to eight weeks.  Therefore, O’Neal’s regular season could very well be over.  Leon Powe will likely have to fill in a bulk of the minutes at center before Ilgauskas returns on March 22.

O’Neal has played extremely well since the All-Star Break and has been an incredible force in the paint.  It will be interesting to see how Cleveland responds to his injury now and how well they readjust when he returns from the injury.
