Cavs Hit the Road, Travel to OKC
Shalom loyal Gospel readers! Today is not only the third day of Hanukkah but, to quote Adam Sandler, today is another day of Cavalier funukah. Our Cavaliers will be in the OKC on Sunday night to take on Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder. And here’s how it breaks down: Oklahoma City comes into Sunday night’s matchup as winners of two straight. Behind steady production from third-year forward Kevin Durant, the Thunder have pulled off a 12-9 early record and have won six of eleven at home. Durant is averaging 28.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while Russell [...]
Weekend Roundup: StepienRules
After a tough start to the week, Cleveland took all of their frustrations out on the Portland Blazers in the second half of Friday night’s matchup. Though the team has the day off for travel, we here at the Gospel do not and we’ll check in with our good friends over at StepienRules.com for today’s weekend roundup: Examining the Race for Homecourt Written by Bill Nagel If you told me after 23 games that we were going to be 4th in the East, and already lost 4 more games then the Lakers, I would have started hyper-ventilating. Even after beating Portland last [...]
Cleveland Sacks Blazers in Second Half
After a disappointing road trip, the Cavaliers returned to the shores of Lake Erie in time to see their Brownies tear apart the hated Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. The Wine and Gold then took the floor against an undermanned Portland Blazers team and headed to the locker room at half time down 54 – 45. After LaMarcus Aldridge put in two quick buckets over JJ Hickson to open the third, Mike Brown turned to Anderson Varejao and Mr. Efficiency responded with 18 second half points to turn the game around. Shaquille O’Neal added 9 of his 14 points in [...]
Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like the King
It was this exact day 18 years ago that a three-time world heavyweight boxing champion by the name of Muhammad Ali lost the last fight of his career to Trevor Berbick in a unanimous decision. Even Ali, one of the greatest boxers to ever live, got knocked down a time or two. And he once said, “What keeps me going is goals.” And that, my dear friends, is what will keep the Cavaliers pushing on after two consecutive defeats: goals. The goal of beating the Trail Blazers on Friday night and the ultimate goal of winning an NBA title. And [...]
Failure to Launch: Rockets Drop Cavs
For the second consecutive night, the Cavaliers recorded 20+ turnovers. And for the second consecutive night, the Cavaliers lost to a very beatable team. Cleveland, who has now dropped four of their last five in Houston, went down 8 – 0 to start the game and were down by fourteen after just one quarter of play. Frustrations mounted in the second quarter when Mike Brown got the boot for arguing a call and Delonte West was T’d up shortly thereafter. The team cut their defecit to single digits on several occasions during the second half but could not shake their turnover woes and [...]
And the Beat Goes On
Yes, I think we can all agree that Tuesday night’s game was not a championship caliber effort from the Wine and Gold. But fear not my fellow Cavalier Crazies, the King and his men will be back at it again on Wednesday night. The city of Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and the largest in the state of Texas. Among other things, Houston, Texas is home to the world’s biggest cake. Back in 1991, an oatmeal cake about half as tall Mo Williams was baked in the same city that our Cleveland hoopsters will visit tonight. And [...]
Cavs Slip Up in Memphis
Cleveland held an 11 point lead after shooting 48.9% from the field through one half of play but was outscored by nine in the third period. With LeBron on the bench, Memphis took the lead midway through the fourth period and spent much of the next 11 minutes jockeying back-and-forth for the lead. With second remaining on the clock and the game tied at 100, James fumbled the ball and fell way short on an unbalanced attempt sending the game into overtime. After two free throws from LeBron James knotted the game at 109 in OT, Mike Conley drove to the hoop [...]
Cavs Travel to Memphis to Take on Grizz
Welcome to the pork barbecue capital of the world, Cavs fans! Did you know it is illegal for women to drive a car in Memphis unless there is a man running in front of the car waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians? It’s a wonder why Memphis is the only city in the states to be recognized on five separate occasions as the Cleanest City in the Nation, huh? All jokes aside, our Cleveland Cavaliers are getting prepared for a Tuesday Night Tango with the Memphis Grizz in the home of Rock N’ Roll. And here’s how it [...]
Anderson Varejao: Mr. Efficiency
The Cleveland Cavaliers made a big splash this offseason by acquiring free agents Jamario Moon and Anthony Parker to compliment their earlier acquisition of Shaquille O’Neal via a trade but arguably the best move that GM Danny Ferry made all summer was locking up the team’s versatile big man, Anderson Varejao, to a six-year deal. His $50 million dollar contract is among the highest in the league for a reserve but Cleveland’s Wild Thing is worth every penny. Aside from his 7.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, Varejao is almost always the most efficient Cavalier on the floor. In his [...]
Cavs Ride West, Drop Bucks
After going down 11 – 0 to start the game, Cleveland responded with a 29 – 0 run of their own behind a 14 point stretch by Delonte West. West finished the game with a season-high 21 points on 6 of 9 from the field and 9 of 9 from the free throw line. Daniel Gibson, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anthony Parker all added 8 points apiece to the effort and Anderson Varejao snatched a game-high 12 boards to help lead the Cavs to their fifteenth win of the season. Former Bucks guard Mo Williams improved to 5 – 0 against his [...]
